The Stories We Tell Ourselves

People often say we all have a story within us....a book just waiting to be written.

**

For many, this is often followed by "Nah - I wouldn't know where to start" or "I am just not creative"

**

How about if I challenge you on that? Because each and every day we are always telling ourselves stories and accessing our world from a perception - our perception.

**

In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), the question would be asked as to whether we experience the world in the same way.

**

Two beautiful quotes to establish this thought are:

- 'The map is not the territory'

or

'We don't all experience the world  in the same way - even though we assume we do'

**

We all naturally assume that we sense the world in the same way. After all, we all have the same basic 5 senses, don't we? However the reality is that we have literally millions of pieces of information coming at any one moment and we simply have to filter information; otherwise, our conscious mind would become overwhelmed.

**

For example, you probably weren't aware of how your feet are feeling right now until you read and pondered on this sentence. Or how your left elbow is feeling today?

**

Note that our unconscious mind does a very good job of drawing our attention to things as and when needed.

**

As well as the information we receive from our senses we also have many internal filters that determine how we make sense of things and what responses we choose.

**

What is interesting is how we utilise (or under-utilised) these internal filters when it comes to justifying our internal dialogue and stories.

**

"The problem with communication ... is the illusion that it has been accomplished."

George Bernard Shaw
